Re: \"buffoonery by blacks whitening NFL\" article by Jason Whitlock
The thing to realize is that, like TSC said (no surprise since he seems one of the few reasonable people on such issues) is that what is going on here is that young, immature people are given huge egos, a lot of money and a huge legal and cultural pass on what they do. Some cross the line, and this should be no surprise.
What is ridiculous is to blame "hip hop". Are we not posting on a poker forum, many of whose members are young, rich, very white guys who do cocaine off hookers and brag about it (to others who wish they could do the same)? I don't want to say that only black people are blamed for being out of control, but compare the backlash they get all the damn time as compared to, say, Linsay Lohan, and the picture becomes pretty clear. [censored] hip hop. Hip hop is music made for dancing to that is popular and profitable because white people like to dance to it and ride around blasting pretending they also grew up in the ghetto. |

What is ridiculous is to blame "hip hop". [/ QUOTE ] Couple of thoughts. I agree that it's a fallacy to blame poor behavior on "hip hop culture" alone, while discounting other likely contributing factors such as getting handed a ton of money at a young age, the possible narcissism resulting from excelling in a sport, and corrupting influences from nutlicker handlers and various other sycophants in a NFL star's circle. But.. Instead of debating whether "hip hop culture" is solely to blamed, how about discussing whether it's a positive or negative influence? Admittedly I'm pretty far removed from the culture, but it doesn't strike me as too far fetched that there is not only correlation, but also causation, between the egotistic and often violent message spouted by what seems to be a majority of hip hop artists and the "buffoonish" behavior often displayed on- and off-field by a lot of young black NFL players. I'm fairly certain that a lot of these young hotshots look up to these artists. They might see something of them self in them. They're equal in that they've made a lot of money and gained fame by excelling in something that they do particularly well. Is it unlikely that some of them have adopted, to some degree, the fairly destructive ideology often found in hip hop lyrics and culture? I don't think so. I'd also like to point out that it seems like some of you are willfully confusing "hip hop" and "hip hop culture", most likely because you have the collected works of NAS, 2Pac and Wu-Tang in your record collection, but hey, that's just speculation from my side... |

[/ QUOTE ] I own a bunch of Nas. Now that you know this, do you believe I am LESS likely to be immersed in, understand, or appreciate hip hop? Also, let me note here that the name of the music of the hip hop culture is "rap." |

Ya I got kind of sidetracked finding the interview. Dids I think he focuses too much on race, but manages to at least be honest and form competent arguments which is something 99% of sports writers can't do. He also will have way too many WTF articles like where he suggested that Garrard was Jackonsvilles backup QB because if the backup was white people would pressure Del Rio to play him.
