[ QUOTE ]
The "top pair" quote was from Doyle at Stuey's first WSOP; the context was that he was referring to Stuey's inexperience with NHLE. I don't know anything about the guy, but I'd assume that sometime in the following 18 years he might have learned to get away from top pair (though obv he's more famous for brilliant calls than laydowns).

[/ QUOTE ]
The quote as I remember it was something like Doyle Brunson saying that "Stuey couldn't play a lick [for first WSOP win], if any of his opponents ever had top pair beat, he would never have won" followed by "But he had a much better idea of what he was doing the next time round..."

In HOHIII Harrington describes Layne Flack as playing in similiar style to Stu's. So maybe Matusow's habits and Flack's play, we are close to what Stu was.

Did he ever share his coke and hookers with you?

At poker, as far as I can tell, he was among the best players but not a superman. He was a rare combination. He had the memory and calculation skills of the nerd players, with the people-reading and manipulation skills of the road gamblers. These days most top players have both, but in those days it was uncommon.

[/ QUOTE ]

I didn't know him, but I saw the movie. It seems like his background as prodigy and the son of a Brooklyn bookie might be related to his having both the streetwise and nerd sides.

If you're talking about the film version of One of a Kind, its credible. If you're talking about the movie 'Stuey', ignore everything you saw. half of it is fabricated and the other half misrepresents reality. Pure trash.

I saw "High Roller". It seemed to be pretty consistant with what I otherwise knew. They obviously dramatized some well known stories.

It seemed a little low budget. Also, they has Christopher in the "Sopranos" playing the adult Stuey. He is an excellent actor, but he seemed too Italian and he didn't dramatize the nerd side to Stuey.
