Yes, they have the Miss straddle in Tunica.
You are allowed to straddle from any non-blind position and the pre-flop play begins to the left of the straddler.

So if I straddle on the button then preflop it's up to the SB right-away as to whether to call or not.

While the ideas in here are correct regarding why a good player might want to straddle it only answers part of the question. Why he should want to do this is to inflate the pot, have a loose image, etc.
Why most others are doing it is because they like to play a little bit crazy and gamble it up which includes such things as live-straddling and checking or betting in the dark, etc.

[/ QUOTE ]
Bob this is only for NL games right? In a 4-8 game you can only stradle from one position (Left of the blinds). Am I correct here?

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm not positive but I think this might be correct in Tunica. I could swear I've played with different guys who live-straddled 7 hands in a row or something. But the more I think about it the more I seem to recall this happening at 1/2 and 2/5 NL.
So I'm guessing you're correct that you only get the one chance to straddle in the limit games but wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong.

I just played my first time in a B&M casino, 1/2 NL $200 max buy-in, and I couldn't believe how many people liked to straddle. For the life of me, I can't figure out why they are doing this.

[/ QUOTE ]

What was your impression of someone who would do this?

My impression was they were guys playing just for fun, taking crazy risks and losing money. I think I know what you're getting at and I see now thanks to this thread there are a few strategic reason to straddle (thanks guys), but I don't think in my example the guys I was playing with had any motives to straddle other than the thrill of the gamble. I got the impression they were loose, wild players not because of the straddling but because they were losing their stacks calling all-ins with middle pair.

If you need to ask about the straddle, you're probably either totally lost, so tight they couldn't get a greased ball bearing up your ***, or you're one of those who need to lighten up and have a friggin' beer once in a while you're playing.

Reasons to straddle:

1. To buy last action before the flop

2. To juice up a tight game

3. To give yourself a loose image

4. To pointlessly jack it up

5. Because it's fun

Anyone who focuses on a straddle being "the worst bet in poker" is so hopelessly lost they can't be saved and should definitely be kicked directly in th nuts. Square.

LOL I'm not too sure if you're kidding or not, but I'll respond anyways:

I WAS lost. First time in a B&M casino and all that. I was nervous as hell as well. I did have a couple (several) beers and eventually got the hang of it. I never straddled though.

I wasn't complaining about the straddle, and I did have fun with it once I realized what was going on. I was just curious why they were doing it and if there was a reason other than "just for fun" that I didn't know about. No complaints, no crying about it, just asking.
