Is the fact that the third baseman threw a ball into the stands relevant to why the pitcher threw the first ball way outside?

For instance, instead of throwing a ball into the stands, could the third baseman have had the ball roll through his legs Buckner-style and the rest of the puzzle be the same?

If the ball rolled through the 3rd baseman's legs, Buckner-style, the puzzle would be the same.
