the same girl multiple times, obv., the ONLY girl ever shown freaking out in conjunction w/ Sanjaya. So obviously a marketing tool by somebody's agent/ publicist.

The most recent thing that comes to mind is the death of Princess Diana in '97. In the UK (if nowhere else) it was a pretty major outpouring of grief. The reaction of the public was bewildering and pretty hysterical, so I think it counts.
