Re: How much are sports worth to you
[ QUOTE ]
Maybe a sports forum thread but if the 20 downs in the NFL thread works. Anyway, how much would someone have to pay you so that you would never see another sport again? You couldn't watch them on tv could go to games couldn't read box scores couldn't read opinion columns. Sports would be cut out of your life completely. How much? [/ QUOTE ] I take that to mean I can't play sports, like golf, bowling, or pool, ever again. Also, to me it means I can't even discuss sports. A lot of my fondest memories are tied to sports and the camaraderie I enjoy with my friends and family. If sports were completely eliminated from everyone's life, then we could collectively find other things to do....that would be terrible, but it would be manageable. But if it was just me, I would have to turn people down every time when they wanted to watch a game or go shoot a round. I'd probably alienate most of my friends, and it would strain my relationships with the people I love the most. While they're watching Sunday football, I'd be watering the garden or something. It would drive me nuts, no matter how much money I had. If I ever have kids, I'd never be able to see them play sports. To a kid, that's a big deal....so either I would have to dissuade them from sports, or make it up to them somehow. If I were rich, I'd want season tickets to my favorite teams and play lots of golf. Can't do that. My gf loves football and hockey. I'd never be able to share that with her again. I enjoy Lobos basketball and football way too much, as do most of my friends. I'd want enough money to retire and set my family up for generations, but then I'd have even more free time on my hands. I'd probably go to a LOT of concerts, casinos, take classes, read a lot, do travel-the-world type stuff...buy a beach house and a mountain cabin...that may be able to fill my free time enough. I think I'm with the "no amount" crowd, but some part of me would do it for something like $100 million. ScottieK |

Re: How much are sports worth to you
I don't take the OP to mean I can't play sports or ever indulge in any type of exercise or activity.
I take it to mean I can't watch, read, or talk about sports. I think the loss would be huge for me because sports is a common point of interest for me, my friends, my coworkers, and my family. There's plenty of people in my life where interest in sports is the only connection. I've had great conversations with people of different race, class, and culture facilitated by sports. I would take $1 million plus, and hafta leave the USA. I think that's the only way I could do it. |

Re: How much are sports worth to you
The practical limitations and restrictions this would put on my life just to avoid sports would make the number extremely high, probably in the 9 figure range.
To just completely quit being a sports fan and live like millions of other people who have no interest and are completely oblivious to sports while not unreasonably restricting their life in any other way (I'll still go to a superbowl party or a company event at a luxury box, watch friends or children play), about 5-10k a year. |

Re: How much are sports worth to you
No involvement with children and their sports participation? So, I'm taking money to deprive my child of something huge. No amount of money makes me do this.

Re: How much are sports worth to you
[ QUOTE ]
No amount of money. If sports were just something I watched by myself at home, then I'd probably be able to put a dollar amount on this. It would be very high. But sports are such a big part of my relationship with my dad and my friends that I can't ever imagine giving them up. I don't think I'd keep in touch with some of my old friends nearly as well, if we didn't always call each other and talk about sports. Some of my favorite memories of my life are going on a road trip with my friend where we went to a bunch of NBA games in different cities, and of course celebrating the Colts' Super Bowl win with my buddies back in February. These experiences are not for sale. [/ QUOTE ] I like this answer. I don't think I could do it for any amount of money, either (at least a reasonable amount -- I suppose for 1 billion I'd have to think about it). |

[/ QUOTE ] Now that I've thought about it, that's dumb. For like $50 million after taxes I can replace the sports-related lessons I'd be teaching. So, yeah. $50 million. |

Re: How much are sports worth to you
Definitely enough money that I could live at a much higher level than I am presently for the rest of my life, plus a premium for finding other fun things to do.
50M sounds like a good number, as there really aren't many things that make me happier than my Buffalo Bills season tickets. Sad as it may be, sports and video games are about the two things that bring joy into my life. I'd probably off myself if I could do neither. |

Re: How much are sports worth to you
As a huge Mavericks, Cowboys, Rangers, and Texas Aggies fan, the last year or so has made me wish I could pay someone to take sports out of my life.
I agree with those that say the number would be really, really high. Sports cause me a lot of unreasonable emotional stress about something that I have no control over, but I also feel like watching golf on a Sunday afternoon or an Aggie football game is one of the rare times that I feel really satisfied with the moment. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that we'd be talking about 8 figures, at least (and I'm dirt poor). |

Re: How much are sports worth to you
I quit sports cold turkey after the chargers/patriots game. People still think I'm joking. I couldn't even tell you what position their first round draft pick plays, much less his name. I don't even know whether the Padres are above or below .500.
My life is better. |
