pj said "If that makes my "moral compass" off (whatever that is)..."
To me this could mean one of three things: - He doesn't believe in morals; - He doesn't like the phrase "moral compass"; - He doesn't understand the the phrase "moral compass". The first option made the most sense to me. I could be wrong. |

Falwell asserted that when The Antichrist ("The Beast") comes, he "must be, of necessity, a Jewish male" [/ QUOTE ] Yea, [censored] him is right. If I was alive when Hitler died, that would have brought me joy as well. (Not saying Falwell was as bad as Hitler) |

anyone who wants to play this "holier than thou" crap scoffing at us for applauding his death needs to look up falwell and find out just what kind of man he really was. one of the most popular evanglists of all time and a notorious bigot whose unfathomably intolerant and racist views were heard by millions.
nothing wrong with apartheid? civil rights is wrong? a jew will be the antichrist? feminists, homosexuals and liberals caused 9/11? ya. there's a sweet spot in hell reserved for this piece of trash. |

The first option made the most sense to me. I could be wrong. [/ QUOTE ] Try option 2. I don't like the phrase because for a lot of people, it means that there is one correct moral code, and your "compass" needs to point as close to that mark as possible for you to be "good." That's why I don't like it, because it assumes a universal morality when in fact morals are so broad and different as they span from culture to culture, religion to religion, and generation to generation. A majority of Americans believe homosexualiy is immoral. Many believe abortion is immoral. Many believe pre-marital sex is immoral. Some believe interracial dating is immoral. How's their compass? I disagree with them, but they have a right to have opinions on morality. So do I. There's no correct way to think. |

nyc, that West Wing quote is actually aimed at Dr Laura Schlesinger (sp), seeing how she's a phd in physiology and holds the same views as the fictional character.
And he can be a Christian and the argument still makes sense bottomset. He's stating "Why this part of Leviticus is okay but not other parts?", which can be done by a Christian, as long as they're not the Christians who beleive every single thing in the Bible applies today. |

[ QUOTE ] Paganists? All 5 of them caused 9/11? [/ QUOTE ] Druidic magick is a lot more powerful than any of us guessed, it turns out. [/ QUOTE ] Obviously, people playing WOW was sooner or later going to bring down some retaliation from the heavens. I'm surprised he left out the clearly pivotal role of Harry Potter movies in causing 9/11. |

His family, his friends and all those who worked with him or at his university are likely grieving for the man they knew. They're legitimately suffering now, having lost a man they cared for and respected, a man most impartial observers would describe as a tremendous douche.
So, given that I won't miss him, and think his life's work was fundamentally destructive, should I balance that with my empathy for the pain of his life and the grieving of those who loved him? I think I should. But it's not a 50/50 split. It's more like 95/5. Jerry Falwell did the best he knew how to do. He behaved as he felt he should. And the way he behaved brought needless suffering to those who happened to differ from his narrow, ridiculous religious and political beliefs. So I won't celebrate his death. I'll just make a gay pride parade reference for the Patton Oswalt fans. |

[/ QUOTE ] why isn't there HolyBible version2007 with all that garbage(and there is a ton of it) edited out, and just leave the stuff they actually still believe in, in there? otherwise its just a random arbitrary mess and killing someone who works on the Sabbath should never have applied at any point in history, likewise for selling your daughter into slavery |
