In dallas, it used to be very nice, like 10-15 years ago. We had our company party there when I was about 10 years old, I remember my Dad buying me and my cousins a 'pot'o'gold' worth of arcade tokens, and it was like we won the lottery. IIRC, that was $500 worth of arcade tokens or something. It had a very nice restaurant and rich wood grain finishings and a strictly enforced dress code.

Last time I was there the clientel had definitely declined. Lots of thugs/wannabe thugs. I heard a commercial on the radio the other day and it was 1 entree and $10 of game play for $13.99 iirc. I think D&B used to be provately held, and is now a public company. If so, that would explain the decline.

The one in Frisco is still really nice, but it's only like 5 years old and is in a rich neighborhood.

But yeah, the one at 35 & Walnut Hill is definitely ghetto. I think it might have more to do with the location (it's surrounded by strip clubs) than whether it's privately or publicly held.

El D,

that Mall is pretty ghetto so not really surprised. I agree on the Applebee's parallel.

Is Applebees Ghetto? Cuz I'd just call it Middlebrow. Not nice, not ghetto, just boring and flair-dipped. That's the MD ones, btw.

[/ QUOTE ]

My theory: If you're in a neighborhood where Applebee's is just a regular, "affordable meal at the mall" restaurant, it's middlebrow. If you're in a neighborhood where it's like, "Let's go get a really *special* meal -- at Applebees!", then definitely ghetto.

Also, I think there's a strong positive correlation between malls being ghetto and whether they're located on a bus line. Other correlation, though more a result than a cause: number of sneaker stores.

ED - Dave And Buster's, huh? Was Chuck E. Cheese's closed or something?

Because that used to be a pretty rad place for a birthday party.

Never been to a Dave and Buster's. seen the commercials.
I assume it's about the same as a Jillian's. Perhaps a half-step lower?

Have been to the Jillian's in downtown Memphis a couple times and had fun bowling, playing-pool, etc.

Didn't think it was the least bit ghetto which is really saying something for Memphis. But I don't think we went on the weekend and I do remember it wasn't very crowded.

A couple years ago there was a shooting right outside that very same Jillian's so I suppose on these types of things YMMV.

lol can you define "ghetto" - Dave & Busters will set a family back $200 for a day of video games and lunch/dinner - not too many "ghetto" families in Philly that can afford that

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats why they're ghetto, cause they blow their money on Dave & Busters, lottery tickets, and rims for their [censored] cars.

El D,

I was visiting some friends in school at Houston over last christmas and went to the Dave and Busters that you mentioned on Richmond. It was pretty ghetto, exactly like the one you described in the bay area. Maybe it went downhill?

Max: Very possible, it has been 10+ years since I went to that one.

MB: Jillian's in SF is not ghetto at all, except a little bit on Friday nights when it turns from pool hall / sports bar into Asian dance party night.

I've only been to the one in Houston but it was okay; it was really empty. It had nasty carpet and a funky smell but there was no white trash and it was really expensive.

All,

It was pretty funny seeing my friend try to order a hamburger here: http://www.daveandbusters.com/pdfs/menu.pdf

"I'd like a hamburger"
"What kind of cheese?"
"No cheese?"
"What kind of burger?"
"Just a hamburger"
"BBQ or"
"Just a regular hamburger"
"Uh, how many patties?"
"Just one"
"What kind of cheese did you say?"
"No cheese, just a regular hamburger, no cheese, on a bun. With some fries."
"OK."

He scraped the cheese off.

[/ QUOTE ]
Diablo, was this haakee or did you meet ANOTHER awesome friend who doesn't like cheese?
