[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] As long as you're listening to them for free and they don't receive a dime, and you're not sharing this music with any impressionable people, sure why not. Btw, Consolidated rocked! Talked to those guys after a few shows, I liked them in thier earlier days before they became so anti-meat. Still, good music and cool folks. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, they had some good songs. The anti-gun one was great. You Suck (with the Yeastie Girls) was funny. But they were SO extreme in their politics - hard hard hard left. Not the best example but I remember the intro to one of their songs was a woman saying "If a woman wants an abortion, for any reason, that's a good enough reason." Even as a very liberal 16 year old I found myself thinking "Hang on a minute..." [/ QUOTE ] You count that as very liberal? [/ QUOTE ] Yes - the speech on the song was meaning "if a woman wants an abortion - just as she might want a Coca Cola - that's reason enough for her to have one." Of course, I'm in favour of abortion being available as a last resort where necessary. But not as a substitute for contraception, not used without thought, without being aware that it's a weighty thing to do. Not used as a consumer choice. |

[/ QUOTE ] I haven't heard the song, but I think you probably misunderstood their meaning. More like, "just as she might want to not let you have sex with her" or "just as she might want to decide for herself if she wants to give away a kidney to someone". I'm not trying to make a statement about abortion or turn it into an abortion debate, but I think that was most likely what they meant. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] So, the two considerations I believe are a) the artist's intent, and, b) genre. For example the comic metal band GWAR have some horrible lyrics about serial killers, but it's part of a death/glam metal genre and you realise it's part of an act. Similarly with the goth bands, their Occult/Nazi references are part of a scene's "dark" image and not really reflecting their beliefs. [/ QUOTE ] This argument is flawed on so many levels. DUCY? [/ QUOTE ] Yes, you're right - the Nazi bands are also "just part of a scene", as are the gangster rappers, etc. So that's no excuse. How about "the politics, beliefs and and behaviours of the musicians I listen to does not reflect my politics, beliefs or behaviour"? [/ QUOTE ] I don't know if it's possible to separate the artist from the art. Especially these days. I think that just by association you are condoning their belief system. The big difference between a band like GWAR and these douchebags is that GWAR doesn't take themselves seriously. They don't actually believe in what they sing about. |

Paris calls whites Devils nonstop in his music. my favorite lyric of his is... So bad to hate somebody else/ But much worse to hate yourself/ Victim to the mentacide of the double-wide/ I don't see how loving Paris's anti-white music is any different from loving whatever nazi, anti-semetic music you might be digging. The real problem is that all the anti-semites are terrible musicians. |

I stopped listening to Rage once I understand them for the Marxist bastards they are.
As far as Nazi bands go, I wouldn't be listening to them and I would seriously doubt the intentions of anyone who listens to them. Forget all this context bs, they are glorifying a movement that killed 6 million people. When your listening to this music for whatever reason your tacitly supporting their message. If you are buying there CDs then you are actively supporting Nazis. |

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, you're right. I clouded the issue by mentioning Prussian Blue, just because I was watching them on TV, when really there is no way you'd like them on musical grounds. And my thread title is misleading. What I really meant, or should have meant, is "Is it okay to like bands who make use of offensive/shocking political imagery?" To which I think the answer is "Yes, if it's good music. Art is meant to shock us." Death in June are a great band, and central to this discussion. Check them out on YouTube. |
