i have hours upon hours of hicks on my MP3 player. his stuff is still fresh and given the political environment we're in sounds like it could have been written today. i listen to his bits on my headphones at work and even though i've heard it five or so times before i still laugh at loud.

Of the “very famous” comedians that I’ve seen in person, I’d have to give the nod to Sam Kinison. But Rodney Carrington is by far the best I’ve ever seen... don’t judge him by his lame show.

No Jim Gaffigan? He's my favorite comedian.

Bill Hicks definitely should be higher up there.

Missing = Brian Regan

And Nick Swardsmon as a new comedian to watch. His character is brilliant on Grandma's boy!

Good call. This guy's hilarious, and as something of a rarity these days, his comedy is clean.

(wish I coulda picked 4)

Anyone other than Carlin, Bruce, or Pryor winning this poll will probably show a simple lack of familiarity with the grandaddies of stand-up.

[/ QUOTE ]

Basically.

I'd probably throw in Bill Hicks, and maybe replace Rock with Eddie Murphy. Beyond those 6, I don't think anyone else is really close.

Those of you who think Dane Cook is the best standup comedian of all time should seriously go find a sword to fall on.

Bill Hicks is the man, with respect to Pryor/Bruce/Carlin.

I like Dane Cook, and I still agree with WillMagic. He's not even the best current standup, let alone of all time.

Jeff Foxworthy
Dane Cook
Robin Williams
Kevin James
Rodney Dangerfield
Sam Kinison
Jim Breuer
Norm Macdonald

All of those are pretty far off the rest. I like Denis Leary's stuff, but he only did two specials -- and, of course, there's the question of how much it was ripped off of Hicks. Andy Kaufman and Bob Newhart I can't judge because I haven't heard any of their stuff, but from what I know, I'm guessing I'd say they don't deserve to be on here either.
