and he has no neck to guillotine. [/ QUOTE ] ummmm....if franca could of got his legs around and crossed I think the guillotine in the first round would of worked Also I agree on the premature stand up....I do think it would of mattered though, cause I thought Nate would lose/get hurt in the 1st round, 2nd round close, then 3rd and later was when "his time to shine" would be. Basically if he could of just kept Silva on the ground and both wasted time/energy I think we would of seen a completely different fight. |

Re: UFC 73 Thread
marquardt looked outmatched to me. silva only threw/landed a few blows the entire round, but every single one of them staggered marquardt.

Re: UFC 73 Thread
[ QUOTE ]
How does anyone beat Sherk? His takedowns seem unstoppable. Kneeing him flush in the face repeatedly deosn't seem to hurt him, and he has no neck to guillotine. Does anyone beside BJ have a realistic chance of beating him? [/ QUOTE ] I don't know, its like fighting a tank for a 155 guy against him. They talk about wrestler strength, this guy has that and the bench 3x his weight strength. Like KenFlo is tough, skilled guy, but someone built like him has only the punchers chance. Manny did it to TUF guys. It seems for the little guys, the difference in physical strength plays a bigger role. I mean Monson is stronger than Silvia, but Silvia is still a big big dude and its almost impossible for one human to physically dominate a man who is 6'8 250. However take a 5'8 155, no matter how skilled in submissions, he can be pretty much helpless in terms of keeping the skilled tanks off of him, submitting the tank, etc. |

Maybe if he tires, Marquardt could have become more effective from the top, but we've never seen Silva gas. He finishes all of his fights too quickly. Maybe he's got crazy cardio in addition to all of his other skills. I haven't seen any of his pre-UFC fights. |

Re: UFC 73 Thread
Marq wasn't going to finish this fight early. He was either going to ride to a decision or possibly get a late fight sub. He just had to avoid getting caught early.
The fight went exactly the way it needed to for the first four minutes. THen we got a standup, Nate got caught with a good straight left, and shot. Nate got a single leg but couldn't finish it, and probably from being stunned wouldn't let it go and ate a lot of punishment. Had he let the single go when he couldn't finish and just backed out and circled to finish the round, he would have a 10-9 and another shot in the second. Instead he hung on, silva pulled out and put him on his back and blasted him. Three seconds longer before the standup and we get round 2 as well. Anyways, I'll take +185 on what I felt was a near coinflip any day. I think we just lost the flip. Hard to tell, ultimately. Fight was going exactly how Marq wanted (and exactly as I expected) before he got caught and finished. -P |

Re: UFC 73 Thread
Perf,
having watched the fight, what do you think would be an approriate line for penn/sherk? This is probably gonna happen in the future, and off the top of your head how would you set that line? (precision not needed for pointless speculation question). I think I'd go with Sherk winning 60%. |

Re: UFC 73 Thread
Mike Tyson said it best,
"Everyone has a game plan before they get hit" Anderson Silva is GOOD. Who can beat him currently in the UFC? Think about it. I'm sorry, justify it anyway you want, but Silva is a class above Marquardt. As soon as Silva let his hands go he could hurt Nate, he moved Nate back a couple simple/single straights. Silva has proved time and again he is a patient fighter. He likes to feel out his opponet and then go to work. What you say when Nate was "dominating" was Silva feeling him out. Silva beats Nate 80% of the time. Tuds |

Re: UFC 73 Thread
So, we have some exciting new matchups ahead, and some duds probably as well.
Tito will get to fight another snoozer with somebody. Sherk/Penn could be a fight of the century, if the Real BJ Penn will please stand up. I'm so glad this is going down. I could write a whole thread on this, but i won't. Silva vs. Franklin #2 should be a good matchup, i think Silva is obv. a favorite but Rich will play this much smarter than last time. He'll not be an idiot and TRY to clinch with Silva this time. Big Nog vs. ??? I think we could see Sylvia or Arlovski fighting here, with the winner to get a title shot against couture/gonzaga winner. That's what makes the most sense to me. Despite the scary moment in this last fight, Big Nog is still top 3 HW in the world and should not have to fight more than once more to get a title shot. I say give him the same treatment as Cro-Cop (after the first fight, he gets a title shot if he wins his second fight.) Any thoughts on these matchups? |
