what do you think average cost at a meal for these places is? [/ QUOTE ] $150-200 per person? Are these places really worth the $$? Looking at the links posted, it doesn't seem like the dishes are all that substantial, and you would leave hungry. I am not a fine dining guru, so please correct me if I am wrong. |

wtf - Michel Bras at a lowly number 6!!!!
that can't be right IMHO he ought to be in the number 1 spot. I've worked with some of the chefs who's restaurants are on this list if that helps I am presently at a loose end - if anyone with more money than sense requires a personal cooked at home meal that would blow at least 1/3rd of those restaurants out of the water to truly impress someone drop me a PM |

[ QUOTE ] Charlie Trotter's. Tasting menu, f-ing fantastic. [/ QUOTE ] while i agree, uh, it's not like there's a non tasting menu. as for $500 for two people, you can do far, far less expensive dinners than that. the menus start at like $105 and good bottles of wine can be had starting around $50. of that list i think i've only been to 1. i am going here on the 15th. honestly surprised it isn't higher up the american restaurant list. c [/ QUOTE ] I went there on a Saturday night. Two menus were offered, the vegetable menu for $125 and the grand menu for $145. I had a $85 bottle of wine and tipped at 18%. $500 total. I'm not sure how I could have gotten out of their for "far, far less". Not that I'm complaining. |

Chez Panisse sucks. The food was good twenty-five years ago; now it's just oily.
Nobu in London was very good. |

I have plans for two more in the next couple of months, French Laundry and either Daniel or Jean Georges. [/ QUOTE ] Not been to either of those - but I always here *very* good things from inside kitchens whenever people talk about the French Laundry.. again I really can't recommend Michel Bras highly enough. The chocolate coulant he invented is to die for. Getting a table there is a bitch tho... |

NoSoup,
I agree w/ you re: Chez Panisse being good, but not deserving of that kind of ranking. I definitely prefer Gary Danko. However, I have one major disagreement with your post. I do not think Michael Mina belongs anywhere near the top of SF restaurants. I think it is overpriced, gimmicky, and only good food, not great. Too much style, not enough substance. Speaking of overrated SF restaurants, I've never understood why Boulevard is so beloved. I've heard fantastic things about the food at the SF Ritz now. I'll go there soon, even though I've heard from friends that it's a totally old and stuffy crowd, pretty much everyone's over 50 (No offense, Andy). I'll give Morimoto a try either this trip or next in NYC. I am such a big fan of his signature Nobu dishes that I have to check it out. |

Woohoo! I went to #4! I'm actually surprised I've been to this many of the world's best, I didn't think Ive done that well so far.
I'm also surprised Morimoto, Ducasse, Ballud, and Bouley are not listed. Is this list considered more prestigious than Michelin? 4 French Laundry USA US 12 Nobu London 16 Jean Georges New York 32 Le Bernardin New York 45 Gramercy Tavern New York |

I think El D might take it, since he travels so much. [/ QUOTE ] JBB comes from a family of gourmets that gets around... he might take this thread down. TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |
