Not sure if this is going to be news in America. The BBC's Panorama about tapping-up and bungs aired last night.

The Bolton manager was alleged to have taken bungs, but there is no proof, although there may be proof that illegal payments went through his son.
The Portsmouth manager was secretly filmed discussing a possible tap-up, and Chelsea's director of youth football was caught doing this as well. A Newcastle coach (while he was working for Portsmouth, apparently) was secretly filmed saying that he would consider taking payments. A couple of dodgy sports agents appeared to implicate these guys as well as possibly Aston Villa (BBC bleeped this but spelled out the words with the right number of *'s (wtf?)), but one of them later came out with the old standby "I was suspicious of these guys so I discussed the crime so that they would think I was also a thief and they would reveal their true agenda to me." bungs? [/ QUOTE ] A bribe. The player’s agent who generally gets 10% of the transfer fee agrees to split it with the manager of the team buying the player. So the Manager has an incentive to singe players who don’t benefit the club. |

Random thoughts since I finally updated the stats through today:
I have the most valuable players offensively as, in order, Louis Saha, Bobby Zamora, Frank Lampard, Benjani Mwaruwari, and Andrew Johnson. Bottom five are Robbie Keane, Craig Bellamy, Darius Henderson, Ian Pearce, and Rio Ferdinand. The latter two from own goals. Top 5 forwards: Saha, Zamora, Mwaruwari, Johnson, and Nwankwo Kanu. Top 5 midfielders: Lampard, Gary Speed, Tim Cahill, Ryan Giggs, Sean Davis. Top 5 defenders: Paul Konchesky, John Terry, Wes Brown, Carlos Bocanegra, and Mikael Silvestre. Bottom 5 forwards: Keane, Bellamy, Henderson, Danny Webber, and Jason Roberts. Bottom 5 midfielders: John O'Shea, Luis Boa Morte, David Bentley, Michael Brown, Hayden Mullins. Bottom defenders are just the 4 guys who scored own goals (Pearce, Ferdinand, Andre Ooijer, and Calum Davenport). (all just measuring offense) WTF is up with Keane? He's only taken 5 shots all season, that can't be normal? And the one Spurs game I caught, he was taking the free kicks. Eh? Finally, adjusted standings have Portsmouth projected to 95.8 points, Manchester United at 93.5, Everton at 83.2, and Chelsea at 83.0. Aston Villa is next at 69.4. Hope some of that is interesting. |
