Michael Amott was born in 1969 in England, but grew up in Sweden. In 1990 he joined British grindcore band Carcass, where he helped develop the melodic death metal sound. In 1993 he left Carcass, and in 1996 a Japanese record label offered him a deal to create a melodic death metal album similar to Carcass's Heartwork. He recruited a former vocalist he had worked with and his younger brother to form Arch Enemy. The album Black Earth was essentially a solo project, with Michael writing all of the songs and also recording the bass parts in addition to his guitar parts. However, due to its success, a bass player and a full-time drummer were recruited and the band became a permanent project and has been highly successful as a melodic death metal band. In 2001, they became the first and only notable band with a female vocalist performing death metal vocals.
