I'm a Giants fan, but I always liked Pennington, so it was a little sad to watch the game today. I'm afraid the conventional wisdom on Chad is correct: didn't have good arm strength to begin with, but more than made up for it with accuracy and decision making. Now that his shoulder has been shredded a couple of times, however, he doesn't have the arm strength to be anything more than ok, no matter how good he is at everything else. Any pass that travels more than 12 yards past the line of scrimmage is a rainbow, which gives the Jets two options: abandon the medium-long passing game, or throw lots of interceptions. Also, since the Jets never throw deep, the running game has no chance to be good, since the defense always has eight in the box.

It's a shame, because I thought today's game higlighted Pennington's strengths, too. A lot of his floaters were on target. An open receiver within 10 yards could count on quickly getting an accurate pass that would allow him to run after the catch. He recognized the pass rush extremely well -- the Giants actually got pretty good pressure most of the day, but Chad was always able to move around and/or get the ball off before they got to him. Unfortunately, when he feels the pressure and sees a receiver out of the corner of his eye, he's unable just to use a quick arm motion to fling the ball to him without it turning into a wobbler.


On the bright side, Clemens should be fine. The FO guys like him a lot, and even if you don't think he's a franchise QB, he'll at least keep the Jets credible until they find the next Quarterback Of the Future. Also, I bet Chad will have a nice career as a backup, if he wants it. I can definitely see him coming in for an injured starter in 2010 and carving up a defense that hasn't adjusted to the fact that they don't have to defend against the deep ball.

Blaming this loss on Pennington is too easy IMO. The defensive scheme is not working. And some of the individual performances and individual inabillity to make plays on defense when required is not good enough. ARRRGH.

We all know the defense blows massively. That ain't changing this season. Mangini wants that to keep happening, so we're stuck with it.

BUT! if we start Clemens, at least we will know if he is the quarterback of the future. We lose nothing by giving Clemens playing time, but we can potentially gain years of playing time experience for him if he starts. If he does start, he'll be going into next year knowing the offense, not being afraid of getting hit, just better understanding, much more then he could learn holding the clipboard watching Chad dump off to Leon.

Ya, I'm starting to agree with this. I mean, we're 1-4. Maybe give Chad one more game, two more, maybe. If we're 1-6 I see no reason not to give Kellen the reps.

I will say this regarding the defense: I'd rather fire Mangini than trade/release Vilma. And if this defense doesn't get good or switch schemes, sayanora.

even if the bills were better than the jets, why do you care at all? both teams are pretty awful right now, i really dont see why you continue to troll this thread
