Carpenter signs five year deal for $65m.

Pretty reasonable given the market right now..I mean Vicente Padilla is getting almost 12 a year and Carpenter is significantly better..

Fun rumor:

[ QUOTE ]
The Red Sox, Mariners and Giants have discussed a deal that would send Manny Ramirez to Seattle, Richie Sexson to San Francisco and J.J. Putz to Boston, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
The Red Sox would also receive Adam Jones and Noah Lowry could go to Seattle in one permutation. The Post-Intelligencer believes there's little chance of anything getting done.

[/ QUOTE ]
I can't tell if I'm crazy or not, but this sounds like it'd be another coup for Boston.

[/ QUOTE ]

As good as J.J. Putz was last year, bullpen guys just aren't as valuable as Manny, or the difference between Manny and whoever replaces him. However, throw in Adam Jones, a 20 year old who put up an .800+ OPS at AAA in CF and it certainly makes things interesting.

[/ QUOTE ] If you look more closely at the Carpenter deal's terms, I'm not so sure this is a good deal for the Cards. The Cards had Carpenter signed through 08 for 15 million, so this is really just a 3 year extension for 50 million for a pitcher with a history of shoulder trouble's age 34-36 seasons; a lot can happen to make the Cardinals regret this deal before it even begins/a lot can happen between now and the time Carpenter throws his last pitch before 09.

Cubs news from the Tribune:

Jacque Jones wants out, and it looks like the Cubs will accomadate him.

Lilly to Chicago still looks probable:

[ QUOTE ]
Lilly's agent, Larry O'Brien, suggested the Cubs were the front-runners over Toronto and the New York Yankees. Lilly is expected to receive a four-year deal worth about $40 million.

"I'm not going to go into detail, but [the Cubs] have pretty much indicated they're willing to pay whatever is going to need to be paid to get Ted Lilly," O'Brien said.

[/ QUOTE ]

The article would seem to imply that this doesn't mean they won't also try to sign Meche (unfortunately).

And apparently Floyd to Chicago is extremely likely as well:

[ QUOTE ]
Talks with Cliff Floyd's agent also heated up, and the Cubs are likely to sign the free-agent outfielder to an incentive-laden deal by the end of the month.

Based on comments from Red Sox employees, it doesn't look like Manny is going to get moved at all. I'm very surprised; I thought the Dodgers would overpay in prospects like they always do. He must be too good of a player to do that for.

Maddux signed a one year, 10 mil deal with the Pads. He's as good of a bet for next season as any SP FA except Schmidt or Zito (not counting 3 1/2 months of Clemens), and it's not a long term deal.

Nice pickup.

Dodgers look like they landed Schmidt for 3 years/47 million.

The Mets traded Bannister to the Royals for Ambiorix Burgos.

Also, cnnsi is now reporting that the Mets are potentially looking to deal Heilman and Milledge to the A's for Harden.
