Moneyball is probably the most engaging book I've ever read. Out of these, I have read Bringing Down the House, Moneyball, The Game, and Liar's Poker. Liar's Poker was a bit too technical for me, and The Game just wasn't that interesting to me. However, Moneyball is the longest book I've ever read in one sitting. Lewis is so good in this book---he makes a chapter about Scott Hatteberg (seemingly average hitter) unbelievably captivating.

ALso, my own question: In terms of Lewis---I liked Moneyball and thought Liar's Poker was decent. What other of his works would I enjoy?

Yea, I felt the same way about Liar's Poker.... good read, but a bit too technical at times. If you like that sort of story though, pick up "Monkey Business" from my earlier reply. That one is a LOT more 'accessible' and hugely entertaining.

i read the books you mentioned OP and liked them, so one book i recently read and enjoyed a lot was Reminiscences of a Stock Operator. Basically about a stock trader from early 1900s and how he made and lost his fortune several times over. This is a bit different then the books you mentioned but does fit your description of normal smart people doing cool stuff

[/ QUOTE ]

I just read this recently. Good Book.

One L : The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School by Scott Turow

This is a classic if you've ever thought of going to law school.

There is also a similar book about first year at Stanford MBA school but I can't rememeber the name for the life of me. It was written by one of Reagan's ex-speach writers. It was pretty decent.

I've read Liar's Poker, Moneyball, When Genius Failed, and Bringing Down the House... all great.

Barbarians at the Gate is pretty good too.

Just ordered:

Kitchen Confidential
Money Ball
Liar's Poker
Word Freak
When Genius Fails

For about $10 a pop from amazon. Looking forward to them all.

make sure to read "when genius fails" after "liar's poker" ... some of the same people appear, so you'll want to read them chronologically.

Not necessarily the same genre as many of the books here, but I would also suggest Into Thin Air by John Krakauer. I thought that was a good read. Its maybe the only book where I've read the whole thing in one day.
