as gay as it is, i have read extensively on the subject.
the old "elitists" won't accept anything besides a really narrow field music being called emo except stuff that resembles punkish bands like rites of spring / fugazi. but really the term and the music have both evolved, and i think the whole debate is retarded.

Real emo (god I can't believe I just said that) is stuff like Texas Is The Reason, The Promise Ring, Cursive, Jawbox, arguably Fugazi, etc. Indie stuff from the early/mid-90s. Like NT! said, the word is sorta pejorative, and you'd never hear any of those bands self-apply that term, but there ya go.

basically it says something that today's "emo" bands are so bad as to make those of us who were into those bands ten years ago want to reclaim a word that most of us hated in the first place.
