I don't see what is so hard here. NEVER hit if you can reach those ahead.

If they are playing slow, ask to play through.

If you lose sight of your ball, yell fore (Had a ball whistle by my head the other day, guy said he didn't think anyone was behind him on the other fairway).

On the other hand, I don't like them throwing the ball, but, since it was done, live with it and move on.

A few years back a friend of my local pro was teeing it up in his first ever CPGA event. On the first hole the starter tells him its OK to go.
He says "I should wait for the green to clear".
Starter: "you can't reach that. Now hit"
Him pleading "I'm pretty sure I should wait"
Starter "if you don't go, you're DQ'ed"

So he hits and proceeds to drive it on the green.

LOL.

Similar story-
Chris Smith's rookie year on tour, he's playing a practice round with Curtis Strange.
Chris is waiting for the green to clear to hit his second shot on a par 5. He's 285 to the middle of the green.
Curtis asks him what he's waiting for, and Chris says, "the green to clear."
Curtis hmmphs, says your 285, you aren't gonna hit anyone. Hit it.
Chris says, "I better wait."
When the green finally clears, Chris flies his 3 wood onto the back of the green!

I played Drayton Valley where former world long drive champ Jason Zuback is said to have played.

Guys like that on a shortish course like that would have to wait for EVERY par 4 to clear.

Does that slow things down a lot for those playing with him or following??

i think you asked the rules question.. The official rule is to place the ball at the most likely place it was.

I drive a number of par 4s at my home course...and it holds up my group (and the one behind) in one spot (on the tee), but it doesn't slow the course down overall because I'm not having to hit from the fairway (I also play very very fast anyway). As long as you play quickly, it will slow it down but then things will catch right up...besides, IMO, when you hit a good drive after waiting for a green, the people watching are usually so shocked at what you just did to forget that you just made them wait an extra 5-10 min.

You probably should have at least shouted and maybenot have hit in the first place but I would go wild for them throwing it back. Thats definately suspension-esque behaviour where I play

Isn't this a 2 stroke penalty? Or am I misremembering hitting equipment rules?
