2) The whole movie is an exploration of the Buddhist concept of living hell. So the detective doesn't get locked up, but his gf leaves him and he has to live with what he has done.

Silence clearly has more than one 'bad guy'. If you don't think Hannibal is a bad guy in that movie... lol

Also, the sequel is the same way.
