Obviously OP hasn't experienced Happy Hour. 1 dollar beer and free chicken wings, I think that's probably how they started to get popular. Plus, they are so damn good when you got fresh beer on your lips.

i think because they are so small, you are able to coat them with sauce that will give a desirable flavoring to meat ratio. on the other hand, the breast and whatnot can only get a sauce on one side. sure, you could cut pieces off and put them in sauce, but then there would be no skin! and skin is a must. Small wings have high sauce/meat ratios, which I don't like. And bigger wings have more skin!
