Bolded the misleading text that makes this riddle hard to understand. You take it for assumption that you are told the truth.

If the guys paid $27 total, the $2 is subtracted from that to find what the hotel gained from them since the bellhop kept.

.... you subtract the 2 from the 27 instead of adding them ldo

9x3 = 27 spent - 2 pocketed = 25 to hotel

I hope I word this right...

You have 2 buckets, A and B.
A has exactly 1 gallon of coffee.
B has exactly 1 gallon of milk.

You measure out exactly 1 cup of milk from B and pour it into A.

You now measure out exactly 1 cup of the coffee/milk mixture in A and pour that into B.

Both buckets are now back to exactly 1 gallon of liquid.

Which bucket contains more of its original liquid?
