Default Re: Parents - What Programs Have Been Banned At Your House?

Just one thing about "banning" hopefully not too far from the main topic.
When I was a kid/teenager the only things explicitly ban at home were :

- drugs
- bringing cheap girls home to screw them
- going outside when it s sunny without protection ( white sensitive skin )
- smoking

About everything else was ok

today I live in thailand under the sun, smoke, occasionaly do drugs, and bring a lot of questionable girls home.

what do you think?

When I was growing up the Simpsons weren't allowed in my house. We also didn't have cable so that easily eliminated all of those shows as well. I do remember however on a few occasions going to a neighbors house and watching Bevis and Butthead. Probably one of the more rebellious things I did at the time. While I don't have kids and won't for a couple years I am "Uncle Five-Star" to my girlfriend's nephew. He's now almost 3 but when he was younger her sister would watch whatever she wanted on TV and he would have to sit there and watch it. Shows like Law and Order, or other violent things. While you could argue that he was too young for these things to have any affect on him, I hated the fact she was exposing them to him. Thankfully, we don't have to worry about this happening anymore. I'm hoping that I can do better when I have kids. I'm thinking that I'll limit the amount of time they spend in front of the TV and more time being outside.

I was also not allowed to have GI-Joes or basically guns when growing up (although my brother and I still turned everything into them). Look how that turned out for me. So don't think that you'll prevent them from making this decision by not exposing them to that stuff.

Regarding my comment above Re:MTV, I will qualify it by saying that how much I attempt to control the TV my children watch largely depends on them. If I have a grounded, sharp confident kid that sees the people on MTV for what they are (basically freaks, morons and people to allow yourself to be entertained by, but not people who's behavior should be emulated), then w/e, they can watch what they like.

However, if my kid is not so confident, a follower and overly prone to peer pressure, I will seek to minimive stimuli that I think will worsen this behavior. I would consider MTV to be an example of that stimuli.

Great post. I see your point about under-confident girls who are prone to peer pressure. It's been a long time since I hung out with any teenage girls so I guess I'd forgotten how easily they are influenced.

Show Biz Tonight touched on this subject. They were talking about how reality shows are influencing girls to get plastic surgery. They cited one study that reported 4 out of 5 girls who sought plastic surgery said they were influenced by reality shows like Dr. 90210 or The Swan. (It said that these shows obviously downplay the risks. Can you imagine the nightmare for the parents?) So I guess you guys are right, TV shows can have a powerful effect on some people.

my parents had a bunch of old books in the storage room of our basement. Several times when I was between the ages of 11-15, I would go down there and start reading the book Ball Four by Jim Bouton. I'd read 40 or 50 pages or whatever and then it would disappear for a while. Weird stuff.
