Over the past 15000 years dogs have been selected to live in human societies. Being very social animals, they are the most obvious candidate to express emotions that would be discernable to humans. Tail wagging + mouth open = happy/excited. Head down + eyes up = sad/shamed/guilty.

My dog has the depression act down. Sometimes I can feel her standing there looking at me, and I won't look at her, and then finally when I do look over at her, she lowers her head and slowly turns and walks into the other room.
