yea, the hate for coz is really weird for me to understand, he seems like he's a very good at what he does (of course, that gm schuerholz deserves a lot of credit), but he gets the job done every year...weird [/ QUOTE ] Define getting the job done. They fall apart in the playoffs every single year. Bobby seems to have no bullpen management skills at all, especially after losing Leo, and it's KILLING the Braves this year. I get really angry at him after a big loss(like last night), when it was a pretty simple decision in my eyes to pull Smoltz after six and use Dotel. He's really good with the players though, and gets the most out of them for the most part. He makes a ton of lousy decisions, but I doubt it's any more than anyone else. |

I think Bobby hasn't been very fortunate to have team leaders like Smoltz & Chipper over the years. I think he gets the most out of the players by putting complete faith in them & giving players a ton of chances, but if you don't have some of the player leadership over the years, it could have been different.
I think he has been half decent the past few years at getting young guys in there, but he never does it at expense of veterans unfortunately. The Andruw situation is just killing us. Just bench him so he can rest/heal at least. Then for the bullpen situation, you have a reliever like Peter Moylan who is pretty much one of the best in MLB right now & he won't put him out there consistently or for more than an inning. The guy has a rubber arm & can start games if he had to, but no, Bobby has to give every reliever a chance. |

I am not a fan of Lou. [/ QUOTE ] I don't care for the way he handles the bullpen, and his insistence on playing vets over kids is hindering the development of several good Cub prospects. And yes kyleb, before you say anything, the Cubs have prospects. They just don't know what to do with them. |

I loathed Mike Hargrove, but I am starting to get the sinking feeling that his replacement (John McLaren) is even worse. Sigh.

wow, i know he had great pitchers, but jeez, when ur team wins 2 billion straight division titles, i tend to give the manager a little credit, no??
like i said, they have a great gm, but it seems cox isn't getting his due...maybe it's coz i'm a mets fan who hated the braves dominance... |

Braves fans hate Cox because he is a terrible manager. He is revered by everyone else because the Braves win and thats all they look at. Torre is a [censored] manager too. There is no question in my mind the best manager in baseball would be Billy Beane but unfortunately he is a GM.

Re: Charlie Manuel
I agree with boc4life that the Phillies needed a more laidback manager after Bowa - that was their reasoning for hiring Manuel in the first place. That and Thome liked him. The problem is that Manuel is a [censored] moron that can't manage a game or a roster for [censored]. Myers is in the bullpen, meanwhile we're starting Lohse, Durbin, Kendrick (who has pitched remarkably well), Eaton and his 6 ERA, etc. I'm sure there are plenty of guys who could take a relaxed approach with their team and not butcher game/team management as horribly as Manuel. |

[ QUOTE ]
It goes beyond just the championship. He makes some mistakes, but he's generally pretty good at his job, he does a great job at handling the media and sticking up for his guys, and beyond that he's just a very likable guy. He rules. [/ QUOTE ] Agree completely. I don't think he's a great mgr on the field. But, I agree that everything else he does great. And in Boston, those intangibles are so much more important than anywhere else. It's a unique situation and he handles everything so very well. Plus, he's had the midas touch when he's gone against the numbers, especially in the '04 postseason. Also, he seems to be one of the most likeable people in all of baseball. |
