I live at home with my folks. My girlfriend of 4 years also lives with her folks (although in reality, we both split time at each others house). We're pretty much ready to get our own home in the early stages of 08.

no, you're not, you're so not.
you're 23, and you want to buy a house with a girl you haven't even lived with yet?
now that is a gamb00l. get an apartment. the odds that you're still together after the first year are a coin flip if you're lucky.

I think you need to focus on the following things prior to taking the huge risks in order to lower life variance:

-Get a high school equivalent degree. I know you don't want it, don't care, etc. But if your poker pro attempt goes downhill and you NEED to get a job, it will become infinitely easier with work experience and a degree as opposed to just one.

-Keep on saving those deposits. I'd keep trucking at poker casually until your earning/hour doubles your work income. Don't gamble livelihoods on what could just upswing/downswings.

-Take the 20k you have set aside and short-term invest it. CDs, etc. Make a few thousand out of it and don't let it rot.

All the advice I have. Honestly you make it sound that if you quit your job, you won't be playing poker with all the free time you gain, but rather you'll split the free time with your girl, poker, and your hobbies. This is fine, but you're not going to see some huge increase is profits as a result. I'd rather wait until the JOB feels unnecessary towards your income first.

what's the rush? If your committed to turning pro and it is just a when question, wait a few months until the mortgage goes through. Your winning enough on the side to keep you occupied for a little bit.

This is actually the best time to retire. Variance is your bitch. Quit while you're ahead.

I disagree - we've been together 4 years & essentially live together now, we just split the time between my folks house & her folks house. But, you never know, I guess.

Most pros, who turned pro after one cash above 5K and with $1000 bankrolls, advise others not to turn pro unless they've won at least WPT event per year over a long enough period so that the possibility of short term luck can be discounted, say 6 years, have a non-poker bankroll of at least 5,000 buy-ins, and have assets of at least $50 million to fall back on in case poker doesn't work out.
