especially given ariel's relatively short stack, viffer's rarely folding AQ/AJ, and he's NEVER folding AK.

Although.. the fact that he bet the river the same that you bet on the turn combined with your history seems like he's goading you a bit which leads me to think he's probably pretty big here..

i would say something like "do you want me to raise is that why you bet that?" and then say "ok" and shove.

if you shove AK/AQ here for value I shove all day. But my image is a bith tigther...if you image is poor then it's obviously much riskier. Also, if this opponent is very strong (i have no idea who he is) then I can easily see him putting out a fake blocker, intending to call a raise. However, if your image is pretty solid (like you indicated it might be in the post) and he's playing pretty snugly (meaning he would have tried to get it in earlier in the hand with a set), I would shove. Him having an 8 here is very unlikely since you have clubs, and most hands with an 8 in it are clubs.

I folded. I wanted to shove or raise but got gun shy (didn't want to see him gloat about baiting me into that shove plus I think he still remembered me as being a lunatic from when we played in LA).

I would just fold, viffers line almosts expect to induce a shove, and he knows it.

reminds me of a hand i played w. viffer at 2040 where there was like 600 in pot on flop of 789 two spades and everyone checked to him and he bet $150, I raised to 1k w.
