Seriously, wtf are you talking about cbloom? It's true that Led Zeppelin I was about half covers, but most Zeppelin fans don't rank it that high anyway. As for the others, here are the original tracks from II, III and IV.

The quoting is getting confusing.

The guitar riff to Whole Lotta Love is original, or at least Page claims it is, and the song is built on the riff. I have not heard the Willie Dixon song, but KoTOD I guess I'll take your word for it if you tell me Dixon wrote the riff too.

The same goes for Bring It on Home. Lifted lyrics but original music, not counting the standard blues rhythm at the beginning and end of the song.

Edit: I doubt they had to settle on Bring It on Home because of the opening and closing music. That is totally standard 12-bar blues rhythm. It's so ubiquitous in blues music that no one can claim ownership of it.

Zeppelin is my favorite band but it seems even to me that they may have been a little shady with how they copied some of this stuff. It did seem much more common for this kind of stuff to happen back then though. Either way, they have more than enough completely 100% original hits to prove that they were great songwriters in addition to being great musicians. Plus, they put a Led Zep spin to all their "covers" so by the time Led Zep was through with some of the songs they didn't sound nearly like the original. Still unethical though.

Take "In My Time of Dying", my favorite Led Zep song. If you have the DVD, you know Plant's little verbal introduction of the song.

"This is a song that uh, came from the deeps, the Deep South of um, the Deep South of America and, and ended up consequently in Earl's Court. If you believe."

I've never heard the original but I bet it sounded almost nothing like Led Zep. It was probably much more bluesy where as Zep's version is much more metalish.

This was on stern along time ago. I couldnt believe how much they stole some of that stuff. Their songs are way better though.

I wish they would have just done the whole show on people stealing music. That would have been the best stern show this year.

Yeah - it's not like these guys are the only thieves in rock and roll. It does amuse me though that it's Zeppelin fans that get so indignant when the topic comes up, as if they are above the title of thief. When you point out that the band admits it freely, the just slink away.
