Masked Man:
Agree with others who said it's fun if you have a group and are there for the show. I've only been to House of Genji in San Jose a couple of times, and never to Benihana, but it's fun, if a little overpriced. Re: that Food Network show...I hope the token white dude got a free trip to Hawaii out of that, as he was overmatched. |

I LOVE teppanyaki...more for the delicious food than for the silly show the chef has to put on, but it's all good. If you go, don't be cheap - get the lobster/steak combo...awesome.

Ov-er-rated (clap clap clap-clap-clap) [/ QUOTE ] Benihana's is, but as others have said, you'll likely get a better meal and a better price at a non-chain place. Also, the best shows I've seen have been non-Benihana. Have you been to Koki Teppan? They had a young guy there that would do tons of cools crazy tricks that I've never seen elsewhere (one involving a flame that reaches the smoke hood). I haven't been in awhile, but I've been meaning to go back and see if he's still there. |

All, http://www.bellagio.com/pages/din_shintaro.asp Shintaro in Vegas is a place I'm considering for teppanyaki. "At the teppan yaki tables, diners can experience a live theatre of cooking, with master chefs preparing multi-course dinners right before their eyes." [/ QUOTE ] Shintaro is MUCH better than Benihana...go there. You won't regret it. In fact, call me and i'll go with you. |

I witnessed a traumatic performance at a Teppan restaurant in Orlando where one young Japanese chef's career came to a screeching halt after he broke/spilled a customer's drink glass with an errant cooking utensil throw.
That experience, coupled with the dry and relatively flavorless meat they serve at Teppanyaki joints, is the reason for my abstinence. If I go to Koki and it sucks, I will eat your soul. |

FFK is generally correct here. Tastes good, fun times, nothing super-complex. I have been to ultra-expensive teppanyaki in Tokyo (I think $200 US a person or so just for food) and it was obviously better but it's still not as good as really good regular Japanesse food IMO.
