and then there is just completely mispelling a common word. The latter is a bad indication imo

Yeah, not really talking about your/you're type stuff here, although that is often a strong indication of dumbness. I'm talking about completely bizarre misspellings that make no sense, like the example in the OP

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm agreeing with you here, and saying that I think people who type "sopost" are dumb, not only because they can't spell, but because you'd have to be completely clueless to have never come across "supposed" and remember it.

My post is a good example of a spelling mistake which is pretty harmless (unless you're writing a report or whatever).

I seriously cant imagine your friend thought supposed was really spelled sopost.

[/ QUOTE ]

I guarantee you she did. Someone in another thread just spelled "pedophile" as "petifile." I mean, wtf?

I think this is almost always the cause when people consistently suck at spelling (or spell something atrociously wrong, like "sopost"):

This is [censored]. I don't proof or spellcheck anything either. "I suck because I don't care" is nearly always a cop-out. You don't care because you don't want to because you suck.

What about improper word usage? EDIT: well played.

My friend also spelled "beer" as "bear" in a recent e-mail, and he doesn't spell very well. He's one of the smartest people I know. My gf is an engineer working on her grad degree, very smart, and she can't spell to save her life. I saw "pedophile" spelled as "petifile" or something in a recent thread. Yikes. Makes me wonder who's running the asylum. It certainly isn't me.

EDIT: Petifile. It just rolls off the tongue.

My parents beat proper spelling and grammar into my head because they highly valued it and saw it as a sign of being educated. My mom didn't go to college, and my dad only did a semester before dropping out. So I also value it highly, but I've given up trying to save the English language. I figure it's a lost cause at this point.

Cardo, writing message board posts in Faulknerian prose is almost as bad as misspelling every other word.

Seriously, though, I agree with your post.

LOL. I was just about to bring this up. I'm starting to believe that most of the forum can't spell pedophile, I've seen many variations, from pedaphile, to pedofile, to the newly discovered petifile. WTF?

LOL at me for having to edit my typos.
