I would probably reformat and start from scrach if this happend to me.

If indeed it turns out that his computer is infected then yes, I would recommend a format as well.

edit: given that stealth malware is out there, if the most likely explanation is that he was hacked, a format would probably be a good idea regardless of what the scans show. ie, FT says it is nothing on their end, no one besides OP had access, but the $ was dumped...

[/ QUOTE ]

With the price of hard drives these days, I have to recommend that a format is almost NEVER a good idea.

But of course do not continue using it.

Buy a new HD for what, ~$40? - keep old one as evidence.

Or just image the drive, reformat and save $40. This is only applicable if OP is going to call in the authorities.

One piece of advice to all of you that have free antivirus, firewalls, etc...

FREE = BAD. You want to protect thousands of dollars on the poker sites and you can't offer $50 a year to buy a proper antivirus software?

Sorry to say, but you're asking to be hacked.

Hope your problem gets solved OP. You should reformat your computer, reinstall windows and BUY a proper antivirus/firewall.. software.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have used all of the products you mention and they are all bad. Try logging into a porn site and see how many trojans they stop (only snoopfree is ok in fact but it doesn't protect from much).

But hey, it's your money, if you want to be cheap on security, be my guest... only, don't come whinning to the forums when your money is gone.

[/ QUOTE ]

I own a computer & tech support company and I have to say the above advice is some of the worst I've ever seen posted on 2+2. Take these comments to the Computer Tech Help forum here and see what kind of response you get from other people like myself who know about security.

Sorry to rant but I can't let information so blatantly wrong to stand without a rebuttal. I won't even dive into the reasoning of why these comments are so far off because this is the wrong forum for that.

A quick glance in the ftp forum, I read they have no phone number to call??

[/ QUOTE ]

In the year of our lord 2007, that does deserve a double question mark, doesn't it? No 800 number.

God only knows what people do in these situations if they don't happen to have a 2+2 account, and if FTPJohn, FTPGeorge or FTPRingo doesn't happen to wake up and notice this particular edition of the daily FTP event...

Good luck man, and in the future remember to only do business with folks who have earned your business. That's a cheap lesson at $500.

Sure you do! Let's all write to Norton, panda, karpinsky, etc... and tell them that they better stop selling antivirus software. There are free ones out there and they are just as good.

What do I care, it's not my computer and I for sure would not use your company's services...

I guess in this area (the antivirus one, not your company), you DO NOT get what you pay for.... you get more.
It must be a coincidence every time somebody complains about losing their money, they are using free protection.

This is highly inaccurate advice. Ridiculously inaccurate, in fact.

Given the seriousness of the issue, you should refrain from making comments in areas where you have no expertise. This is not a laughing matter; people come here for help.

If you don't know what you're talking about, get out of the way and let others help.

QFT

Seriously, bring this discussion to the Computer Tech Help board. There are many very qualified computer/tech enthusiast and professionals who will be glad to help explain how this all works.

I just don't want misinformation spread that might cause someone to quit using a good product because of something they have read here.

Companies like AVG offer anti-virus clients that DO cost money....$39 a year for the "Pro" version. However, they offer the exact same product for free to home users. According to AVG's website the only difference in the free and pro product is:

Free 24/7 technical support
High-speed downloads
Consent for commercial
Multiple languages

Feel free to pay for the Pro version of AVG if it suits your needs better. Nothing wrong with that. But just because you give them money for the same product it won't change it's effectiveness.

Some of the leading security experts in the computer world including Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson, actively use and suggest the use of these free security software apps. And if you mention Norton or Mcafee being great at any gathering of nerds, you will likely get heckled.

In the computer software world, free doesn't always = junk, actually far from it. Oh and we haven't TOUCHED on open source software, which is considered by almost every geek to be superior to most similar commercial products.

I realize that to many people getting something for free that is actually as good or even better than something they would normally pay for is hard to imagine. But again, in the software world often that is just how it goes. Often the motto of "you get what you pay for" is actually the opposite in the software world.

I should probably add a bit to my post as I don't want to appear flippant.

Obviously if one is planning on pursing legal action, a backup (or image) of the drive should be made. Simply turning over the drive to authorities doesn't leave you much recourse in the case that the evidence is lost. You should maintain a copy of the image (or the original drive).

Also, we should probably add a section to the Zoo faq covering 'I think I have been hacked' as this issue has come up with increasing frequency. Coldcaller's thread provides excellent info on how to protect yourself from being hacked but I believe some info on what steps to take if you think your system has been compromised would be useful.

Sorry, but, you have absolutely NO [censored] idea what you're talking about.

What are you basing this on? I think you're just pulling [censored] out of your ass. I rarely flame like this, but honestly, the claims you're making are absolutely ridiculous.
