[ QUOTE ]
Is this just rock music? Mozart and Beethoven have got to be more famous then some of those bands. [/ QUOTE ] You also have to add J. S. Bach to them. |

Mozart, and it's not even close.
He was a renegade during his time, and largely unappreciated until after his death. Beethoven and Bach were more "mainstream" and popular while they were alive, but did not have as much impact in the evolution of western music as did Mozart. If you want to talk about who had the greatest (are more direct) impact on modern, popular western music, Scott Joplin gets my vote. He practically invented ragtime. Without that you don't get jazz, blues, rock, etc. Though Joplin isn't as well known I suppose, but you'll be hard pressed to find someone in the western world who doesn't recognize the "Entertainer" when they hear it. |

It's weird that you consider that a "Direct" influence when you have to go through like 4 genres before you get to modern music.
The artists you hear most in today's music are the Stones, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Rakim. |

Still indirect, but more direct in contrast to the influence of Mozart is what I meant.

Yeah, I get you. It just seems like you can keep going back and back to find out who was the biggest influence, so it's a bit silly to bring Mozart into it.

And now that I think about it, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bob Dylan yet.
Most widely known, influential artist still alive and actively performing/composing perhaps? |

Elvis probably changed the course of music more overall than anyone else by popularizing rock and roll and music that wasn't being played in the mainstream (read: music being made by black artists). However, the Beatles probably directly have influenced more people and genres of music than Elvis did.
I'm still not sure if Take That is a joke inclusion but they had one big hit in America: "Want You Back." (OK don't know name for sure but it went Whatever I did, whatever I sad I didn't mean it, I just want you back for good. Good karaoke song but it's more funny than anything.) |

Artist...sigular.
Today, I believe the list goes... Michael Jackson Elvis John Lennon 15 years ago I would have put Elvis on top, but a lot of old people have died since then and he just doesn't get the press/notoriety (or even mentioned) as he once did and many teens around the world have probably never even heard of him. |

From Dave Barry:
"Over a billion Elvis records have been sold. There is no second place." |
