Damn It--What Are You Guys Talking About??!
Look--Departed was a good movie, and nothing more.
By "good," I mean "better than the average movie." That ain't saying much, obviously. I just watched this movie again tonight, and I can definitely tell you--it's just not that special. It's not even remotely in the same class as the Big Three--Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas. And it's not as good as "The Next Three," either: Casino, Mean Streets, and The Color of money. It's not even as good as "Some Others," like King of Comedy and Gangs of New York. Jesus, it's just not that freakin good. As an aside, I'd like to point out one of the distinct differences between Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and virtually all of the others Big Contenders: Ready? Music. The soundtracks to Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are BRILLIANT pieces of art in and of themselves. We already knew that Gimme Shelter and Layla were great songs.

Just packing the film with great songs from roughly the era in which it is set (give or take ten years, it seems), while relatively effective (Casino, Goodfellas), has nowhere near the impact of a great score (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull). Think of the music at the end of Taxi Driver, when avenging angel Travis murders, um, all the bad guys in whoreland. Strings, swirling...scary and profound. Now imagine they were playing, uh, Time Has Come Today. Just not the same. Think of the scene in Raging Bull when Jake finally gets his shot at the belt. Beautiful, sweeping, perfect soundtrack at this point. Now imagine they were playing, I don't know...Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. Great songs, sure, and probably not even all that bad in context. But not approaching the emotional effectiveness of the scores that were actually used.
