[ QUOTE ]
I think there's hope, because their AA team was pretty damned good this year. [/ QUOTE ] If they can hang onto guys then obviously building from within is pretty much their only hope. Burning a few dozen mil $$ at a shot on guys like Gil Meche really hurts though. But when you mention championship caliber AA teams and having solid prospects I'm reminded of another last-place team who had good teams with their single-A Lakeland and double-A Erie squads in consecutive years. Of course, these are farm-clubs for the Detroit Tigers. Seems like every team is only a few blossoming prospects away from at least being able to compete. A team that at least has a shot for .500 is only a few happy bounces and inspired plays away from an 85 or 86 win pace which keeps you in playoff contention for a long time and at least gives you a shot and keeps your fans interested. I think not only their current minor-leagues, but also the additions to their front-office. If they are really doing their homework and hitting colleges and high-schools looking for talent while also hitting the minor-leagues harder (looking for young kids in trade or even Rule V free-agent draft who might be a bit overlooked within their own organization) then that bodes well for their chances. Organizations that spend the money on building a top-notch minor-league system stand a much better chance of making it happen than those teams that tend to cut corners and count every travel-penny spent of every scout and instructor and employee. Sounds like the Royals are committing a bit more to their office (which would hopefully mean their farm-system) than they were before. |

Wow, how is this surprising to anyone? Owners are always spouting off talking about how improved teams are going to be at these offseason forecast things. Bottom line is Glass knows very little about what it takes to have a successful baseball team. He is a business man, not a baseball man.
I'm not from Kansas City, but I live in an area close enough to pickup the Kansas City sports stations. And in case you guys haven't heard, nothing good is played music wise on the radio anymore (especially in Kansas!) so it's all sports shows all the time. Some good stuff posted here so far, but also some nonesense. I don't like Glass, but the Royals don't need a new owner right now. They have a general manager in Dayton Moore who is going to get things done. He was a big part of the success in Atlanta, and he knows what it takes to build a successful team. It appears as if he has got Glass to spend some money and leave all the baseball decisions to him. I think this was part of what brought him to Kansas City, was Glass telling him he would allow him to get the players he needs. So for right now, despite these nutty remarks, Glass is ok in my book. What you need to be doing is looking at what DM said, and not Glass because it will be much more on point. What hurts the Royals big time in my opinion is that they are in the toughest division in baseball. So the Royals might be improved, but it might not translate into a lot more wins. The Indians should be better this year, and Detroit, White Sox, and Twins were all top notch last year. I'm optimistic for an improved team that is still a few years away from being a real contender. They were 62-100 last year, and I'd say will probably have between 85-95 losses this year. What DM said about Gordon and some others already mentioned is that he's wanting them to force his hand (basically make it to where they have to play). He is looking for much improved competition all around for all spots. Gordon has experience at the one bag, and Teahan can play outfield so I think if Gordon makes it in this year you will see some different lineups by the Royals until they get one that works best. |

The Royals remind me of a little kid trying super hard to accomplish an impossible task, as his parents stand around saying, "awwwww... isn't that cute." [/ QUOTE ] When I was 6 or 7 I was determined to count to a million on a family trip to see relatives in Wisconsin. Everyone said, "awwwww... isn't that cute" (and then under their breath, "wow, glad that freako isn't my kid.") Family reunion with a zillion relatives and I'm continuing to count as fast as I can under my breath. When I got to 99,999 I thought I had reached a million. My Dad informed me that it was only 100,000 and that the millions were after the hundred-thousands. My Mom was ready to kill my Dad for not letting me believe I was finished. I believe I got as high as 600k or so before I finally got bored on the car-ride home and gave it up. |

I'm from KC. I have a couple friends who refuse to get into the Chiefs because they break your heart all the time. But they are Royals nuts, to the point of spending a few hours every day cruising Royals sites and forums (which I was surprised to find even had traffic). I guess when expectations are nothing you can't get let down. Anyway these guys really think the Royals will be close to 500 next year and good a year or two after that when their prospects mature. I have my doubts.

Suzz: I really think the Royals will show improvement, but not a lot in the win/loss category. We can't overlook 19 games against each opponet in the toughest division in the league. They might be quite a bit better and still lose 90 games. I'm into the Chiefs and Royals. They both broke my heart so many times it doesn't even work anymore.
