question (may sound dumb):
do current dvds present pre-HD tv shows, e.g., seinfeld, in the highest possible quality? |

DVDs are the same resolution as standard def tv - 480 lines.
So the answer to your question is yes. But they look better because you have none of the interference/imperfections generally associated with cable, etc. |

Keep in mind HD is still lower resolution than 35mm (or better) source material. Film > Digital. But for home theater anything shot digitally should look better.

[/ QUOTE ] Technically this is true, however you almost never get to see clean undamaged film shown from a well calibrated projector on a clean undamaged screen. Most people who see HD digital video for the first time are blown away by the realism in a way that film doesn't match. It completely breaks down the awareness of watching a recording and makes it feel like you're looking out the window. Of course if you have a crappy LCD with bad blacks and side viewing that ruins the illusion as well. |

My local theater now has DLP projectors and they blow the film projectors out of the water, because you always have the blemishes/dust/scratches on film. |

[/ QUOTE ] That's a definite advantage, but while they may look better to you than most film projectors, under ideal circumstances (pristine copy of the film in a good theater), film is still king. But, I would guess stuff shot digitally (e.g. the new star wars movies) would look better on DLP since the source is digital. |

I agree, I'm just saying that those perfect conditions never exist at your average cineplex.

I'm looking to pick up an HD DVD player? Should I get Blu Ray instead? A little help please.
