OP: Why don't you spend a day or two just walking around the city checking out various neighborhoods? It's a great way to see SF and will you help you figure out where you'd actually like to buy.

Ask yourself a couple questions:

1. Do I own a gun?
2. Am I going to be unhappy having the majority of my city attempting every socialist experiment the city council can dream of?
3. Are my parking skills in the 99% percentile?
4. Do I expect to have days on end of fog with no sun in sight in the summer time?

If you answered "Yes" to 2 or more questions, I would pick another city. Even moving closer but staying in the East Bay would do. Berkeley Hills are nice. Piedmont. Access to the city without living in it. Much better I think.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've lived in Berkeley hills, and living there bears absolutely no resemblance to the lifestyle that OP said he was looking for.

I'm not even going to address the idea that someone concerned about a far left municipal government should live in Berkeley instead of San Francisco.

I looked around Berkeley Hills when I first was on the market - some amazing properties, way out of my price range though. Some of them may have slid downhill since then. I briefly thought about Oakland, but obviously I would then need a gun.

Yo I just moved to San Fran too. Got a pretty decent place in hayes valley. I haven't seen too much of the city yet, but its pretty sweet so far.

May I suggest you edit your blog, and remove all "Frisco" references. They really hate that. Duly noted. Thanks.

Lots of good clubs in SF, do you spin? Nah, not really. I'm not into the club thing so much as bars and whatnot.

BTW other poster, i moved to SF from boston also. I live on russian hill, in trinity apartments which btw has a really great view. if you wantt o live with crazy people there is Haight st., i haven't been there much but Mission area seems like a chill place to be. then there is pacific heights, russian hill, the stuff on the north basically which is more rich yuppie people, but that is where you will get the view i think.

i think the stuff on the north will be nicer higher quality places, a view, more expensive. the places lower closer to downtown have better location, closer to cooler people and stores and bars and will be smaller cheaper and cosier. dont know about the realotrs one... hope that is helpful, i am new to the area but that is basically the rundown diablo gave me which i found to be true.

Nob Hill here.

Owning a car here would be a bad idea. As for the weather, it's nice. Not hot, but nice. The fog is more of a Richmond/Sunset thing, so don't listen to the weather whiners.

I live in The Mission, renting. It's the best neighborhood for meeting skinny girls with beer guts who ride track bikes and drink pabst at a dive bar after an art gallery opening. If that's your thing.

Prices for buying real estate seem pretty out of hand in the desirable neighborhoods. Your only hope is to buy somewhere "up and coming" which basically means "sucky right now". Some ideas are - the east side of The Mission (I live near the park = expensive & nice), SOMA, Clement Street area (Richmond), other?? dunno

You don't need a gun but your wife/girlfriend should carry mace.

Savage,

you mention the car thing. I currently live in Sacramento, but I think I might move out there sometime early '07 when a friend returns to the states. I would probably keep my car. She definitely won't own a car, because she's pretty po'. Will that be a problem getting around? I go out there about once a month, but I don't have a good feel for the public transportation situation.
