Tips on how to study history

I will be studying at Queen's University Belfast.

Like I said, I already have a degree in law. I have also read quite widely over the years.

However I find it impossible to narrow down what I am interested in due to my overwhelming ignorance (history is *rather* a broad discipline!!).

This year I will be studying:
1. Historiography
2. The British Empire
3. either the Roman Empire or Modern Asia

I am very pleased to have the chance to study these subjects (yes even historiography!!). Have read some stuff on the others and can't wait for the chance to look at them properly.

Quick and dirty way to sink into the era is to pick up a historical fiction book. Clavell, Michner, etc. come to mind readily.

If still interested in the subject, you'll go into the matter with at least an outlined knowledge of the subjects.

Tread carefully in ascribing fictioinal narratives as facts, though, so a combination of the two would make it enjoyable for some.

I think NT´s point is good, you need some kind of entry point to get yourself more emotionally invested in your subject matter.

For me it has been historical fiction and the computer game "Europa-Universalis2". It is a great game with a great community, much like 2+2.
