The idea of having 20 buyins (or 16, or whatever) isn't as easy to mathematically prove as the idea of having 300 big bets as a useful bankroll for a limit game.

I think that the issue here is your ability to deal with the size of swings you're getting rather than the actual bankroll requirements.

When you double your limits, your swings (should) be the same vs. the size of your bankroll, but the money may mean something to you again. So you should simply move back down, go back when you're comfortable, and repeat until you are comfortable with the size of the swings at the new level, whether you're winning or losing.

I play low limit (.5/1, 1/2, 2/4, and recently NL25) with a 9K roll.

I have no gamble.

This is, without trying to be insulting (honest!), kind of pathetic.

Yes, this is a big problem for me. My roll is now $1400 and I still play almost exclusively 0.5/1 limit HE and stud, 25NL (or lower), $1-10 MTT's and $5 SNG along with head's up matches. The money doesn't even mean anything to me (I haven't cashed out or deposited in 3 years!) and I'm afraid of losing 100 BB in 1/2.

I am well overrolled for the NL600/NL1000 games I play, but I also
a) am playing professionally, so more of a cushion is essential for financial/emotional security
b) invest portions of my bankroll not in use (When I say "in use" I mean everything beyond like 20-25 buyins)

Playing with a deep roll is fine, if thats what you need to do to play your best game, but if you're going to do so, at least put the portions of the roll that you'll never need into some sort of interest-bearing account.
Leaving 40 or more buyins just sitting around in party or stars or whatever is kinda stupid. (Unless the extra amount isnt really enough to invest efficiently due to fees and commissions and whatnot.)

LOL, I thought everyone wanted to be a baller (IANAB). I'm guessing some/most of these huge bankrolls came from big MTT scores, & lack of cash game confidence?

Wow. For me, you're exactly right on both counts.
