[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I tip for service. $1 per pot is my standard number for all the limits I have played ($1-3 spread limit up through $20/40). I adjust a bit for dealer quality--I have tipped a bit extra to especially good dealers, and quit tipping a couple of really bad ones. I doubt I would tip much more if I played higher limits. I think the dealer is performing a similar service. However, I WOULD be much more likely to give large tips to dealers who did things like point out marked cards. Also, I think that the convention where you tip for pots you win is stupid. I'd rather just withhold tips until the end and then give the dealer a few bucks based on how well they did their job instead of how lucky I am. I would do it that way if I didn't think it would cause friction at the table. [/ QUOTE ] The problem with witholding tips till the end is that most poker dealers keep their own tips and they change dealers every half-hour. So the guy you tip at the end gets 100% of the money and all the other dealers get nothing even though they dealt to you. [/ QUOTE ] Tip the dealer before he switches, obv |

I think dealers must be compensated relative to the stakes to diminish the temptation to cheat or skim. If a dealer can increase their hourly earn by 20-fold just by taking one chip from each big pot, then that could be a problem. Maybe not so much in a TV game, but almost certainly in a regular game. [/ QUOTE ] paying a dealer more so he doesnt cheat you is a lame excuse at best. He/she is easily replace by someone with less education than the previous dealer, which isnt much. I do believe in tipping for there service but lets not exagerate there worth ok? |

[ QUOTE ] Most pros do not...why? Because it's all about making money [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, tipping $5 instead of $1 on that $3,000 pot just KILLS my hourly rate. If it's all about making money, why tip at all? Why even pretend the dealers are actual working people? [/ QUOTE ] I agree with you, why tip at all at such high stakes? The experience factor alone should be of enogh value to the dealer when dealing at the very highest limits. |

If i were playing amateur sunday league pub football (soccer) i wouldnt tip the referee when our team won the match. I wouldnt tip him if he did a good job and called everything right and we drew.
I would expect the fee the team pays to the league to adequately compensate the referee to the degree that teams shouldnt feel the need to tip them. If the fees paid didnt support this, maybe they should be increased. |

If it's all about making money, why tip at all? Why even pretend the dealers are actual working people? [/ QUOTE ] Actually, changing your tip/pot from $1.00 to $5.00 has a huge impact on your hourly rate, especially if you play 5/10. If the house takes 10% up to $3.00 max, your rake expense will be approx $12.00/hr. If you play where the max rake is $4.00 and you tip $5.00/hand, you've effectively tripled your rake expense and are paying approx $36.00/hr to play at one table. If you are a good pro, your winrate will be approx 5 PTBB/100, or about $1.00 per hand. You'll be playing about 20 hands per hour in a live casino, and losing $16/hr because of your $5.00 tips. If you can beat the game for 10 PTBB/100, you'll enjoy a profit of $4.00/hr. |

I don't tip more/less for a big vs. small pot b/c I'm tipping for service, not results. If the dealer is good, I'll tip $3, if bad, $0 and if normal, $1 - (very rarely am I tipping $3) If I take a $200, it's not b/c the dealer did something good, no different then if I lose a $200 pot I'm not going to berate the dealer.

From Paul Phillips' journal (12/7/04):
Q. What's the acceptable dealer tokes in a game that big? Not that I'll ever get to this point, but I've wondered how much a player will toke after a decent pot in the bigger games. PP: One dollar if they deal well. The dealer is a casino employee, not a gambling partner. Dealers don't fade any of my losses so they don't get a percentage of my wins either. I admit that sometimes I splurge and tip two dollars on big pots. |
