"The Fielding Bible" says otherwise.
Derek Jeter had a Plus/Minus of -34, 2nd worst among regular Shortstops. |

I think everyone who is rational can agree that Jeter is at best a below average fielding SS.
For like 6 years in a row he had either the worst or 2nd worst Range Factor among Shortstops. |

If Jeter were a normal guy, he'd just be some black dude. Because he's famous and rich, he's white. It's sad.

[/ QUOTE ] The Fielding Bible (and similar methods, such as UZR, STATS UZR, and Dial's ZR) are pretty much the best you're going to get at defensive metrics, especially for something like shortstop. If we were talking about 1B or C, there's still a lot to learn... Seriously, just watch a Yankees game and count how many times Michael Kay says "past a diving Jeter." Defense declines pretty quickly. For a guy to be a good shortstop at 32, he'd either have to be phenomenal at 25 or be a hell of a defensive mind. A guy like Omar Vizquel can probably play shortstop at a decent level into his 40s because he was amazing at a young age, and he knows hwo to play the position very smartly. Jeter was never a great shortstop, and he's not a particularly defensive minded shortsop. He's bad out there. This should be expected. What's so hard to believe a 32-year-old can't play the toughest non-catcher position in baseball? |

PS: A-Rod probably is overrated, to some degree, in the sense that many feel he's going to end up as the best SS of all time, yadda yada. He's also pretty underrated, too, with all the not clutch talk...

Please, A-Rod is so un-clutch it's not even funny.
I mean, when was the last time he's had a game winning hit? |

This is where someone thinks you're serious, lols, calls you an idiot, and says last night. Then some other idiot comes along and points out that it's May and it's the Devil Rays.
