Re: DUIs
[ QUOTE ]
I believe the problem with drunk driving in this country is so bad because the penalties aren't severe enough. [/ QUOTE ] I agree completely. I've heard that drunk driving is much less common in countries - like Germany - where the laws have more teeth. Also this is an interesting read on this subject: DUIBlog |

Re: DUIs
I've been reading the replies and thinking about them. I can see how you people feel. In fact, I'd probably be saying the same thing. But I got a feeling, you would really change your tune if it was your best friend.

Re: DUIs
Quit making excuses. Your not being a friend, your being an enabler. He needs help and you need to tell him that.

Re: DUIs
Before driving drunk, I would recommend first learning how to drive. If you get pulled over blowing .08 then you suck at driving

Re: DUIs
[ QUOTE ]
This thread kind of went away from where I was wanting it to go. I was looking for people that actually have received DUI(s) in the past to share their legal experience. However, this might be something good for him to read. Also, I've added a poll to see what kind of hypocrisy this thread will have. I'll admit, I've driven drunk. I've been so drunk that I've passed out in the vehicle with it running in my driveway. I haven't drank anything in a few years. But back in high school, I admit I did it ALL THE TIME. I thought nothing of it. [/ QUOTE ] My brother has 3 DWI's. He lives in NJ, and was able to get the 3rd charge to be the same as a 2nd charge. He avoided jail time and only lost his license for 2 years instead of 10. Tell your buddy to get a GOOD lawyer. But tell him to be prepared to pay for it. |

Re: DUIs
[ QUOTE ]
Twenty years ago when it was socially acceptable to drink and drive I did. I was stopped by the cops on more than one occasion and told to go straight home and be careful. Thankfully we have advanced as a society and that doesn't happen anymore. [/ QUOTE ] Wanna bet? |

Re: DUIs
I've never gotten a DUI myself, but I know plenty of people that have gotten various amounts of DUIs. I only know one guy that actually went to jail for it. He ended up doing about 6 months, but he had like 5 or 6 of them. A year for a 3rd offense sounds pretty ridiculous. I hope your friend wasn't stupid enough to take a breathalyzer or anything like that, so he'll at least have a reasonable chance of beating the charge.

[ QUOTE ] Also, you friend is not responsible and is not a good guy. He's not "unlucky" he's just plain stupid and deserves to go to jail. [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: DUIs
Its not uncommon to hear of 5th,6th, or even 7th offense DUI here in Tenn. I agree that 1 should be enough. 2nd offense should be permanent suspended license(IMO), regardless of the person or who their lawyer might be.

Before driving drunk, I would recommend first learning how to drive. If you get pulled over blowing .08 then you suck at driving [/ QUOTE ] Good observation. Part of the reason people are getting more alcohol-related offenses is that M.A.D.D. keeps strong-arming the lawmakers to lower the BAC levels. It has gotten pretty ridiculous some places. I'm all for people getting what thery deserve when they drive when drunk, but .05 is not drunk. |
