I've kinda wondered about whether or not smelling pot is probable cause for a search. What I would do is deny permission for the search and if he actually legally insists, then obviously allow it, and don't comment further. Perhaps your lawyer will have a way out of the situation should you get arrested, having to do with the legality of the search.

Last time I got pulled over by a cop, I was walking with my buddy with my hands in my pockets and the squad car pulled up and shone a floodlight at us.
I turned my back to the car. They asked me to walk over there. I said no. They asked me to remove my hands from my pockets. I said no. Eventually I came over, and he asked me how much I had to drink that night. I said nothing. He asked me why I didn't come over right away, I said that I didn't like being pulled over. He asked me where I was going: no comment. He asked where I was coming from: no comment. He asked me if I had ID. I said yes. He asked to see the ID. I said no. I offered him my name, DOB, and address. He checked it out. He yelled at me for a few minutes, and left. There's really not much they can do. I live in Canada, though, and I don't know much about U.S. laws.

i've always wondered about this, i know that for the most part i'm not obligated to comply with cops, but is there any information i am required by law to give them?
