[ QUOTE ]
I covered a volleyball game last night where the team that rallied from down to games to win 3-2 had one girl — a 6-foot-3 middle hitter — had 36 of the team's 43 kills (successful spikes) and all 10 of its blocks. I go to talk to the coach about her carrying the team, and she said something like, "It was a great team effort ..."

Later she told me she's having to deal with the parents of the other girls who are upset the star girl gets more attention than their own daughters. I hate god damn parents.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think I've had that many blocks, but I would have loved to have 36 kills in a match. Too hard to set yourself though.

(I like being 6'3 too!)

I'm not going to be around after about 2:00 today to answer questions or check entries for obvious mistakes (MD-WVU tonight!!), but I should be back for the reveal on time tomorrow*.

* Unless Maryland wins - then there's a fair chance I'm still in bed at 12:30.

I don't think you want to watch that game tonight. It's gonna be U-G-L-Y.

(I hope I'm wrong though.)

Where do you write? Western Maryland? That's pretty much Mountaineer country, no? I'm just hoping it's halfway competitive, but we'll see... Marshall shut down Slaton & Co. for a half - no reason we can't do the same.

Wshington County is more pro-Terps than pro-WVU (although it's pretty even between Redskins, Ravens and Steelers, which is interesting). Once you get into Garrett/Allegany counties, though, it's more WVU.

I'm a lifelong Terps fan (probably not a good one), and I just don't think they're that good. And I don't think they were good last year, either ... lots of smoke-and-mirrors wins. But I'm a pessimistic guy by nature.

Agreed. I'm a die-hard Terps fan (I go to ~9+ games a year), and an apathetic Redskins fan at best. Fantasy football diluted my interest in the Redskins I think. I try to be realistic about Maryland though, and agree with you about last year. Until the bowl game, we had only outgained ONE opponent all year (teams like FIU and Middle Tennessee had more yards than us!). It seemed like playing mistake-free, and the timely turnover or drive (see the Virginia, Miami, and Clemson games) gave us a few more wins than we should have had. Some people claim that's "coaching" or "intangibles". And while there's something to be said for that, it was probably more "luck" than anything. Most people don't understand or refuse to admit that though. I was stunned at the beatdown we gave Purdue.

I think we're probably a better team than last year, though we'll be hard-pressed to go 9-4 again. I'd be very content with 8-5, and probably be happy as long as we make a bowl. The defense seems adequate. I think we're a little thin on the offensive line, though the starters are above average, and the Portis thing was quite a blow too - he was supposed to be the dynamic piece we needed. He was the best player on the field at the Spring game *two* years ago, let alone this year. I'm still amazed that the University kept that under wraps for months while it was going on all summer.

Less than 7 hours... man, today is slow...

Here's a blog post I made on the Terps last year, which basically says what you said.
