I said he almost took offense to it.

i am 22 and call everyone sir, though it's basically a habit and not intended to be over-polite. i also go through spells where i will call everyone under the age of 30 'kid', which i imagine causes some offence.

Sir is a title of respect used in several modern contexts.

It was once used (without the person's name) as a courtesy title among equals, but in common usage it is now usually reserved for one of superior rank or status, such as an educator or commanding officer, or in age (especially by a minor)

Then why is it I get pissed off when those who answer to me at work call me 'sir'?

I feel like this one prick is trying to belittle me.

Lol when you call older women ma'am (40+ range), in my experience at least, they get that older, cute kind of "oh now your making me feel old don't call me that." But that just might be me because older women adore me.

I am 23, and call all males older than 13 sir, if they are not morons. I'm amused when I say it to a 17 year old cashier and he doesn't know how to react.

[/ QUOTE ]

When I worked as a cashier (between ages 14 and 18) I was being called semi-regularly sir by people 50+. Was always funny/weird.
