I personally think H.B. set the standards, but The Driver is ridiculously awesome. Anything with CGI shouldnt really be mentioned imo, as best car chase scenes.

When Gone in 60 seconds was released, it H.B. personalyl went around to movie theatres and did car stunts so the movie house would show it, in exchange for a peice of the ticket sales. Some of the theatre owners would go back on their word, and he sent a "collection man" to get his cut. The collection man was about 6 something 300lbs.

What? The majority of the Matrix entirely was CGI, not just the highway scene.

I'm not here to diss on CGI -- when done well, it can look really good. When done poorly (um, anyone for 2 Fast 2 Furious?) it's so blatantly cheesy as to be laughable.

But the reality is, anything CGI isn't really happening, so it's not a real chase at all. That doesn't mean it wasn't a decent scene in a movie (which it was), but no, it's not even a real car chase, so it can't even really be considered as one of the best car chase scenes.

+1 on the original Gone in 60 Seconds, though.

yes, I concur. The car chase scene in the matrix was an awesome scene in general, but from the pure standpoint of a car chase scene...it wasnt imo...because it didnt really happen.

And that took a ton of excitement out of the scenes for me. Shame, because those scenes are supposed to be all about excitement.

I seem to remember the film Duel being a car chase of sorts. It was an awesome film, so there was probably a really good chase bit in particular.

Not so much a chase, but the crash in Casino Royale was pretty awesome.

Are we forgetting that the car chase scenes from the classic 70s movies actually happened, and were caught on film? How can you not see the difference?
