I think you make a good point, but I'm mainly concerned with democracies over the last century or so. The trend seems obviously toward more government, regulation and taxation.

[ QUOTE ]

Could you rephrase this and make it understandable please?

I can.

'It seems that the ethical progress of humanity as a whole, while perhaps not proceeding at an ideal rate, proceeds more rapidly the more structured the legal system of a given society is. This contradicts the views of ACers.'

That being said, this would seem to imply that totalitarian state would have the most ethical populations, which depending on how you chose to define ethics might be the case.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks, makes sense now.

I can't play online poker, but its good to know that humanity around me is progressing more ethically now that more statutes are on the books.

Along the way, we've seen some "interesting" points of view -- apparently some people believe that angels (or that the most advanced humans) would require the MOST regulation and government. This seems utterly paradoxical, of course, but this may be a necessary belief for those who think more government would be better.

[/ QUOTE ]

Less government is always better.

However, if the beneficiaries of government, i.e. the people, desire to undertake more complex tasks (possibly due to an increase in virtue), then their need for hired help, i.e. public servants, in a fiduciary role increases.

Many people would argue it's less ethical to play online poker.

Cake too. Cake is always better. Lesser government with cake, pretty great, I'd think.

Many people would argue that its less ethical to eat cows.

Do we need some refined statutes to prevent any further eating of cows in order to progress more ethically?

Nobody was forcing them to do so.

Well if it were less ethical to eat cows we would. By definition, no?

Corollary to your statement: It is IMPOSSIBLE to progress ethically without invoking laws which force people to do so.

Hence, I disagree.
