Re: Do you believe humanity will reach the year 3000?
I guess I have to re-think this, since some don't think nucular war couldn't do it. That's pretty much what I was thinking of, along with screwing up the environment so bad and trashing or using up all of our resources. There's also some possibility we could create some scientific experiment (like in partical acceleration), that would/could unintentionally destroy earth.
Over population is a big problem too, although I'm not sure 1000 years is enough to kill EVERYONE off. |

[ QUOTE ] We will kill ourselves off well before then. [/ QUOTE ] Like... how? [/ QUOTE ] Well, it seems to me that some sort of engineered nano-super-virus could be possible in the near future that could wipe out all life on earth. |

Also, will people still play poker in the year 3000? [/ QUOTE ] I think a better question would be, "will people still play poker in the year 2050?". It's a toss-up. Or how about, "Will people still play online poker in the year 2020?". "Bots" will inevitably ruin poker, first online, and not-long afterwards for live poker when AI and other computational technologies become integrated with the human brain. Obviously I'm a strong believer in the singularity and other Kurzweil-esque predictions. |

LOL indeed. Name something you think could kill every single human on the earth. The only event I will concede could is a cosmic collision, and we aren't due to hit another galaxy for a period of time much larger than any given. [/ QUOTE ] Zombies. |

Re: Do you believe humanity will reach the year 3000?
[ QUOTE ]
My point is not so much that tech advances will increase without limit and "go infinite", as it is that it will be in our power very shortly (much less than 1,000 years) to engineer ourselves into a new and far more capable species that will be qualitatively different from what has gone before (hell, we're already cloning human organs, beginning to build computer/brain interfaces, and the mapping of the human genome is less than a decade old). In 1,000 years, unenhanced humans might be around in a wildlife preserve sense, but they will be about as relevant to large scale goings-on as neanderthals would be in today's society. [/ QUOTE ] This is my answer as well. Whatever dominates in a thousand years will have some genetic relationship to us but will have undergone enough engineered change that I don't think the term 'humanity' will apply. The only thing I can see stopping this is a non-extinction catastrophe that causes total information loss in society. For the record I am in the camp that the singularity is very far off, and it has no bearing on my above prediction. |
