Your answers will be busted because a "shake" is not a shake is not a shake. In most places a shake is milk + ice cream, but in some places, a shake is exactly that, shaken cold milk, and the ice cream/milk concoction is something else. That's the case in, for example, Rhode Island, where a shake as I know it (with ice cream) is often called a "cabinet."

I thought this was a really, really small part of RI. I could be wrong. I grew up 15-20 minutes from Providence, and I never heard it there, but I did here it in Warren and Bristol, two towns I lived next to.

Are there any other strange local name differences? Now that I've moved to cali I've never seen non-ice cream shakes, or another name akin to "frappe" or "cabinet."

I like both, but I prefer a really great chocolate shake made with vanilla ice cream - called a black & white in some parts of the country. And it MUST be thick enough where you could eat it with a spoon but not so thick you can't suck it through a straw. it's a delicate balance.

El D:

Next time you make it this way and can get to a Chic-fil-a, try the handspun shake.

Best non-malt shake I've had.

Fa'reals.

My apologies! I thought you were referencing your home town when discussing the "cabinet". I take it back, don't move, but let's boycott those RI freaks and their strange vocabulary.

Language butchering bastards!
