Re: Best films about drug use and addiction?
This is a great topic Jimm, I'll check out some of the films you listed.
London, certainly not the best film but interesting to see Jason Statham in a non-action film where he does coke all night in a bathroom. Very realistic as far as drugs (it's semi-autobiographical on the director) with weird/interesting dialog but got absolutely destroyed by critics and certainly was a dumb premise. Spun for meth (can't verify) How to Operate Your Brain for LSD (Timothy Leary), longest 30 minutes of your life |

Re: Best films about drug use and addiction?
I just got an amazing opportunity to write a script (paid upfront!) on a musician who was a drug addict. I'm looking for ways to make it unique and realistic. It's not supposed to be linear, more congruent to his lifestyle (impulsive and unrestricted with talent, ambition and sheer insanity).
It's not about drugs per se or showing the experience of drugs but rather about living a fast life -- low low times and lifting himself up to greatness while doing everything and anything big, wild and out of control. Any writers, feel free to share ideas if ya have them. These drug-films will definitely help. |

Who doesn't like Requiem for a Dream? [/ QUOTE ] I really didn't want this to end as a RfaD thread. To me it's unwatchable, laughable, and without merit. I hated Pi and I hated this too. Take away the MTV style and there's not much left. Try watching RfaD and Christiane F back to back, or RfaD next to City of God - it's Andy Warhol next to the Mona Lisa. See the broader scope and vastly greater artistic achievement of these films, and realise how lightweight and disposable RfaD is. Christiane F has characters you care about; a realistic evocation of time and place; an engaging plot; and incredible performances. I don't see any of this in RfaD - the old woman you mgith say is a good actress, but her performance is just annoying and ridiculous. The "shocking" montage at the end of RfaD just made me laugh. If I want to watch lesbian anal I'll reach for my porno collection instead. The fatal flaw of RfaD is it's an unpleasant film to watch - and, yet, as Trainspotting and Christiane F show, you don't have to make an unpleasant, unwatchable film just because you're dealing with an unpleasant topic. |

Re: Best films about drug use and addiction?
dude,
you have to make a difference between: - doing drugs (and the filme makes it look rather cool) - doing drugs (and the filme shows drugs as the sorce of all evil) - selling drugs Chistiane F is the film which makes drugs look the worst. Blow on the other side doesnt say in any way that it is wrong to do drugs. And requiem for a dream makes drugs somehow look rather cool and as enable for money (has anybody noticed that Jareth leto dies in most of his films? he is just total [censored] up at the end of requiem for a dream but he dies in American psycho, in lord of war, in alexander and he get beat the hell up in fight club) |
