Everyone likes Dire Straights for
"Sultans of Swing" "Money for Nothing" but "Down to the Waterline" and "Brothers in Arms" trounces both of those songs. |

Johnny Cash: X - Hurt, Folsom Prison Blues, Boy Named Sue Y - Jackson, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Daddy Sang Bass [/ QUOTE ] it's interesting that you say that. he actually wrote the bold songs, but all of the songs in Y are covers, with the original being a lot more well-known than cash's. Hurt is an outlier because it's most recent. |

Well, I admit I'm such a sucker for the Body & Soul album that, imho, anything on it pretty much trumps the whole Night & Day album. And Ellen Foley's (or is it Sue Foley, I forget) background vocals on that record make me swoon. Still, for my money, I'm mostly digging on the special edition live CD that came with copies of his Joe Jackson Band reunion album. The playing on it is badass, and Graham Maby's always been an influence of mine. Anyone who digs on Joe Jackson is cool like dat in my book. [/ QUOTE ] Mar 14, 2003 - I drive 6+ hours from Memphis to New Orleans to see the reunion of the Joe Jackson Band at the House of Blues. It kicked ass. |

IMO, this doesn't work for artists like Floyd, Hendrix, and Cash who are not known PRIMARILY for only one or two songs.
I'd even be tempted to argue about Skynyrd, but there probably are millions of people who know Freebird & SHA, but not Simple Man or Saturday Night Special. I suppose the logical end of this topic is: X: Stairway To Heaven Y: The Rover & X: Satisfaction Y: Sway & X: You Shook Me All Night Long Y: Down Payment Blues I'll offer up: Thin Lizzy X: The Boys Are Back In Town Y: The Toughest Street In Town The Psychedelic Furs X: Pretty In Pink, Love My Way, Heartbreak Beat Y: Into You Like A Train, Sleep Comes Down, Ghost In You Butthole Surfers X: Pepper, Who Was In My Room Last Night Y: Cherub, Human Cannonball BTW, with the exception of Pepper (which I despise), I like all the X's here almost as much as the Y's, and also could have offered up dozens of other Y's. I wonder what artists, if any, there are that have lots of great songs, but there's general consensus, even amongst geeks/twits/nits that their most well-known song is also one of their five best ones. Stairway prolly IS one of Zep's five best songs, and I'd also throw "Hey, Jude", "So What", "What's Goin' On", "Let's Get It On" & "New Year's Day" out there for topic starters. |

I was living in DC during his full on tour, and tix to his show sold out in like 10 minutes, and I never went. And I've never seen him live. |
